Company Profile:

GDI – a name synonymous with quality, customized boats. GDI has built over one hundred large boats for southern Africa’s land waterways – including the awesome Lake Kariba, the mighty Zambezi River, Namibia’s wild Chobe River, Zambia’s Kafue River, Botswana’s Okavango’s Delta and the great Kabora Bassa. Every boat is custom designed to the customer’s specifications, carefully considering the local conditions.

GDI was founded by the late George Demblon in 1957, beginning as a switchboard and light sheet metal manufacturing company. In the early 1980,s he built his first kapenta rig. He was joined by his son Gerard in 1984, and they began building cargo boats and aluminum speed boats. In 1986, the company moved to a 3600m2 factory in Msasa, Harare.

From there, the company has moved from strength to strength, building larger and more sophisticated boats. We take boats from the planning stage, through to drawings, building, transportation, launching and commissioning.
